McDowell County EMS

Operations

McDowell County EMS responded to 7743 calls for service in the year 2008. This volume marked a 12% increase in calls from year 2007. Our agency is constantly seeking ways to better serve our citizens. EMS administrators constantly monitor data that tracks areas of calls as well as response times. In 2008 our agency’s average response time was consistently under 9 minutes. Our county poses great challenges in regards to response. With elevation ranges from 900 to 4700 ft response times are often over 10 minutes due to terrain and distance paramedics must travel. Our agency understands that we must always try to improve the status quo. No matter how far we advance our agency is committed to go even farther.

McDowell EMS currently has 7 units within our fleet of vehicles. The agency operates two E-450 Ford Ambulances, four F-450 Ford Ambulances three of which are four wheel drive ambulances, and two Chevrolet Suburban's four wheel drive which is utilized by the EMS Director and the EMS Shift Supervisor.

Paramedics work 24 hour shifts and are off 48 hours. Currently McDowell EMS has 21 full time employees and 20 part-time employees.
