McDowell County EMS

Operations

McDowell County EMS responded to 9704 calls for service in the year 2011. Our agency is constantly seeking ways to better serve our citizens. EMS administrators constantly monitor data that tracks areas of calls as well as response times. Our county poses great challenges in regards to response. With elevation ranges from 900 to 4700 ft response times are often over 10 minutes due to terrain and distance paramedics must travel.

McDowell EMS currently has 11 units within our fleet of vehicles. The agency operates two E-450 Ford Ambulances, six F-450 4x4 ambulances, and three 4x4 quick response vehicles. The quick response vehicles are utilized by the EMS Director, EMS Operations Officer, and the EMS Shift Supervisor.

Paramedics work 24 hour shifts and are off 48 hours. Currently McDowell EMS has 28 full time employees and 34 part-time employees and volunteers.
